Comin’outtamycageandIbeendoin’justFINE…

Happy Wednesday everybody!

Today, I’ve got another grand song/ story analysis for you… it’s… Mr. Brightside by The Killers!!!

I’m pumped because I know literally all of the words and I could even type all the lyrics out myself… but I won’t do that because then I won’t feel like typing anymore afterwards.

Anyway, let’s dive right in. Lyrics first; analysis after!

Coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine

(Finally getting up for the day… or something like that, and he’s doing JUST fine… not great, but not bad either, probably.)

Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all

(You gotta go with the flow if you’re gonna get what you want.)

It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss

(Pretty much explains itself, doesn’t it?)

Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag

(Now I’m trying to go to sleep, alone, while she’s with some other guy somewhere.)

Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head

(Now I can’t sleep because I’m imagining them doing all of this together.)

But she’s touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

(They’re about to hook up and she’s leaving me in the dust.)

I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis

(Basically… being jealous causes everything else to roll downhill.)

But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I’m Mr Brightside

(But, you know what? I don’t care because this is my fate and… I’m Mr. Brightside!)

(And now… we literally repeat everything over again.)

I’m coming out of my cage
And I’ve been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I’m falling asleep
And she’s calling a cab
While he’s having a smoke
And she’s taking a drag
Now they’re going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it’s all in my head
But she’s touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

‘Cause I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it’s just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
‘Cause I’m Mr Brightside

(…Until now. Now we just scream ‘I never’ a bunch of times.)

I never
I never
I never
I never

And there you have it- Mr. Brightside!

Okay, now some more thoughts…

I’ve heard a lot of different views from people turning the story of these lyrics into different directions… but, from my point of view, I think it’s just a song about a guy with a terrible girlfriend that cheats on him all the time. I mean… he can’t stop thinking about a specific girl with some other guy, he says she’s letting him go… unless she broke up with him and now he’s jealous of whoever she’s with next (jealously is in the song). I guess it also could be about a guy that just has a major crush on this girl who’s with someone else…

Okay, I wanna change what I originally said. It can be taken a lot of different ways, but, at the heart of it, it’s still a song about a guy who’s jealous… and probably jealous of whoever else is with this girl. Most importantly, though, he realizes at the end of the day that he shouldn’t care because there are better things waiting for him… and he’s Mr. Brightside!!!

Now there’s a lesson to take from this.

Be a Mr. Brightside today!

So… what do you think this song is about? Let me know!

LOVE this song, and great review. I interpret the only a kiss part as him cheating with her on her boyfriend. He shouldn’t have kissed her but he did, and now he can’t get over his feelings at seeing her with someone else. I feel like it’s really hard to interpret this song accurately though, haha. I totally agree that jealousy is the general sense, and it’s making him miserable! Great song review. It really made me think.
